“Fashion has always been a backdrop to most of my memories, I also referenced important moments by what people wore. As a young boy I would make clothes for my friends dolls, using plastic and recycled materials, however, growing up in a tiny village Ge-Sekhukhune in Limpopo; there was a lack of information on the fashion industry as a profession.

I couldn’t voice my desire to follow fashion, as I had no reference of anyone from my village/province who became a success as a fashion designer. I later went on to study, IT at Rosebank College and during this time, I began making garments for family members and posted these on my social media. This is when I received a private message from Gert Johan Coetzee on Facebook asking
me,, if I was interested in interning for him.

In disbelief, a week later, I was juggling my final year of college and interning at Gert Johan Coetzee. Having caught the attention of one of South Africa’s most prominent designers, this gave me the courage to found Tembisa Fashion Week in 2017. However, due to a lack of funding I was not able to continue what I hope would become an annual event.

With 100 guests, 7 designers and 20 models in attendance, I felt affirmed, which became the genesis of the birth of LSJ
